WRITEUP
CAPESIZE
The downward trajectory continued today, with the Pacific remaining the main source of pressure. The BCI 182 5TC fell by a further $1,396 to close at $36,222, while the C5 index slipped by $0.530 to $12.980 and the C3 eased by $0.225 to $32.680. Activity in the Pacific remained subdued, with only one miner in the market and a limited flow of tender cargoes failing to provide meaningful support. Rates continued to slide, with bids heard from around $12.60 against offers in the low $13s. Three to four fixtures were reported to have concluded at $12.95, reflecting the continued downward pressure on C5. The Atlantic was similarly lacklustre, with sentiment softening amid very limited activity. Rumours circulated of a C3 fixture at $33.50 for 1–10 November dates, although this remained unconfirmed. Looking ahead, brokers noted a gradual increase in enquiry for mid- to late-November dates, which could help provide some support to the market. However, with activity still thin across both basins and sentiment under pressure, it remains too early to determine whether this will be enough to halt the current decline.
PANAMAX
The Atlantic market fundamentals are described as remaining fairly balanced. Market participants reported a relatively healthy trans-Atlantic minerals and grains cargo book, although some suggested that while pockets of tonnage tightness remain evident, overall vessel supply appears sufficient to prevent any dramatic rate spikes. The Pacific maintained the positive sentiment and momentum noted yesterday. Market sources described demand from both Australia and the North Pacific as active, with some suggesting prompt tonnage is beginning to tighten and fixtures are being concluded above previous levels. Indonesia was also reported to be experiencing increased activity, with fresh enquiry helping to reinforce the more positive market sentiment. The scrubber-fitted Troodos Air (84,849 2016) open Lanqiao 13 October was reported fixed, although no further details emerged. The scrubber-fitted Atlantic Bonanza (82,143 2024) Shanwei 15 October was reported fixed for an EC Australia coal trip to the Singapore-Japan range, with no additional information available. Meanwhile, both the Junior (92,995 2012) Jintang 14 October and the Spring Wealth (93,347 2012) Jintang 16 October were said to be on subjects, although no further details surfaced. The scrubber-fitted Amemptos (81,107 2019) open CJK 16/18 October was said to have been placed on subjects by Contango for laden legs around the mid $23,000's with the scrubber benefit for the charterers. The Pacific Energy (93,764 2011) Tanjung Bin 17 October was also said to be on subjects for 2-3 laden legs at $24,000 to Lestari. The P5TC fell by $2 today to close at $21,886.
SUPRAMAX
Sentiment in the US Gulf improved with fronthaul levels appearing to jump, with a 63,000-dwt fixed for petcoke to China at $34,000, whilst further south the fronthaul rates softened from EC South America with talk of levels now at $19,000 plus $900,000 ballast bonus on Ultras, whilst the trans Atlantic bid/offer spread there seemed too wide to see any concluded trades. The Continent remains firm still, and the Mediterranean continues to see fresh demand which has lifted the recent gloom. In Asia there was a strong fixture of the SSI Diligent (63,846 2022) Tianjin 19-24 October fixing via NoPac to Bangladesh redelivery Singapore at $25,000 reinforcing the recent trend, and backhaul rates are also rising on forward positions for steels/generals. Steady Indonesian activity continues, with rates increasing for cargoes to India. The index was mostly positive with the 11TC average rising $148 to close at $23,171.
HANDYSIZE
The Handysize market recorded another quiet session, with sentiment largely shaped by positional factors. The BHSI closed at 1,000, while the 7TC average increased by $24 to finish at $17,994. In the Continent and Mediterranean, market fundamentals remained stable, with fixtures continuing to align with previous levels. The South Atlantic maintained its upward momentum, with participants remaining optimistic as rates strengthened further. A 42,000-dwt vessel open on the east coast of South America was heard fixed for a trans-Atlantic trip close to $30,000, although further details were not disclosed. Meanwhile, the US Gulf continued to face headwinds, as an increase in prompt tonnage and a lack of fresh cargo placed downward pressure on rates. The Asian market also experienced another quiet session, with the tonnage list appearing relatively shorter while enquiries continued to be discussed at healthy levels.
